About Kulturland Brandenburg

Rediscover Brandenburg again and again!

Brandenburg is one of the youngest federal states and the largest in terms of area in eastern Germany. With its unique combination of sparsely populated rural areas and urban centres, the dynamically developing Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region and an interwoven German-Polish cultural area, Brandenburg offers scope for imagination and potential for innovation that cannot be found elsewhere.

Since 1998, Kulturland Brandenburg has been inviting artists, cultural actors and cultural institutions, as well as associations, civil society initiatives and local actors, to devote themselves to this cultural space and to engage with its cultural heritage and diversity, the gaps in its past, and the challenges of the present and future.

Cultural and artistic projects are created on themes that change every two years in the fields of visual and performing arts, music, literature, media art and applied art, as well as in the fields of museums and remembrance culture. From this, Kulturland Brandenburg develops a comprehensive, state-wide and year-round programme of events aimed at everyone in Brandenburg and beyond.

Past themes of Kulturland Brandenburg

A vibrant network

Kulturland Brandenburg sees itself as a interdisciplinary network where actors from the fields of art, culture, science, education, administration and tourism come together.

The changing themes with which Kulturland Brandenburg calls for participation arise from the continuous exchange within the network. At the annual Kulturland Brandenburg Forum, partners and colleagues, cultural actors and interested parties jointly develop new ideas, provide impetus and forge alliances for the future, which are incorporated into the themes of Kulturland Brandenburg. The format of the Kulturland Brandenburg Forum is deliberately kept open and expressly invites participation.

Calls for participation and funding

The changing themes of Kulturland Brandenburg are preceded by a well-founded call for participation, which is developed with experts from the fields of art, culture, politics, tourism, science and business.

The calls for participation invite cultural professionals, artists, cultural institutions, associations and civil society actors from the state of Brandenburg and beyond to submit project ideas for Brandenburg. These ideas are presented to a jury of experts and discussed with them. Each year, the jury members select between 20 and 30 projects from the submissions that are proposed for financial support with funds from the state of Brandenburg.

More about funding from Kulturland Brandenburg

Consulting

Kulturland Brandenburg offers regular consultations. These are aimed at those interested in funding during the submission period for project ideas.

During implementation, Kulturland Brandenburg provides content-related and technical support for the funded projects. However, the consulting services also aim to provide support in acquiring third-party funding, networking and the implementation of funding regulations.

Communication

Another central task of Kulturland Brandenburg is the comprehensive communication of the topics and the project partners involved. To this end, Kulturland Brandenburg develops a comprehensive corporate design for each topic, which is also used to communicate the projects in the state.

In addition, Kulturland Brandenburg accompanies and communicates the events within the framework of the funding with its own press work, social media channels and website.

Responsible body and funding

Founded in 1998 as Kulturland Brandenburg e.V., the programme has been sponsored by the Brandenburg Society for Culture and History gGmbH since its merger with the ‘House of Brandenburg-Prussian History’ (since 2024 Brandenburg Museum for Future, Present and History) in 2014.

Kulturland Brandenburg is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg and, since 2006, also by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning. Kulturland Brandenburg uses these funds to provide support for cultural and artistic projects based on changing themes. Depending on these themes, other state ministries also provide financial support.

Long-standing project partners and sponsors include the East German Savings Banks Association and the Investment Bank of the State of Brandenburg.
