Opening “Das Weite suchen.” Photographs from the late GDR and early 1990s
This exhibition presents images from a decade that is now remembered and discussed controversially. It shows works by twelve photographers who sought to explore new horizons on a personal, artistic and socio-documentary level. Between 1983 and 1995, the artists captured both stagnation and existential changes in their images.
On 27 November 2025 at 6 p.m., the Brandenburg Museum will open the exhibition “Das Weite suchen.” Photographs from the late GDR and early 1990s, a collaboration with the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Research Potsdam (ZZF).
The exhibition features images by twelve photographers taken in the 1980s and early 1990s. The five chapters of the exhibition – Youth, Work, Body, Violence and Living Spaces – paint a picture of a society in transition. Fractures and continuities in the ‘long decade of change’ between the end of the GDR and the 1990s emerge and encourage a new examination of the decade of transformation in East Germany.
The Brandenburg Museum is an open place where transformation and upheaval in the past, present and future can be seen and discussed together.
Curated by Dr Isabel Enzenbach and Dr Anja Tack (ZZF Potsdam).
